I have purchased a DS412+ for a small office installation and am also going to get an APC UPS (based on the Synology compatibility list). I spoke with APC tech support and they said in order for the NAS to communicate with the UPS and monitor battery level I would have to install their Power Chute software on the NAS drive itself. My question is if it is possible to install third party software such as APC's Power Chute on the NAS and if so what would be the process. Otherwise does just connecting the USB cable between the DS412+ and the UPS accomplish the same form of communication. Separate comment: I'm now questioning my choice of the DS412+ after coincidentally reading some other posts talking about end of service life for the DS412+!! Any thoughts on how long updates will continue or when this line's service will end? Thank you for the additional replies, my needs are simple, I just want the DS412+ connected via USB to the UPS so the NAS can monitor the battery level of the UPS and shut itself down accordingly when the battery reaches a certain set level.
I'm assuming this is what can be accomplished by 'enabling UPS' in the DSM control panel. Are there any specific settings I need to look out for? I am an audio video integrator and I've tried the USB connection with Synology NAS drives and a Panamax MB850 UPS but it didn't work so I've chosen an APC brand UPS that was on the Synology compatibility list and that has the USB port but that is not network capable (model BN1080G) so hopefully this one will work.

Thank you again for your replies. Maxxfi wrote:In Synology you can either plug a UPS directly via USB, or if you have more NAS to be protected, the other units can monitor UPS if you give the IP of the one that is directly connected to the UPS. Or, you can even plug the UPS to a PC or some tiny device that can run the 'NUT server' (check ) and have your Synology's and other computers connect to it via network. Or if you have more heterogeneous devices and/or these requires different behavior in response to ups events you can add a network card (NMC2-AP9631/AP9630) to the APC UPS. Syno NAS is able to manage the UPS also over network connection. APCSMT2200I+AP9631. Vigor2830Vn+: LoadBal 2xADSL(20M/1M.mcr512K,8IP)+1x4G/LTE.
